About Hanningfield Reservoir

Hanningfield Reservoir covers nearly 900 acres and was created in the 1950s. The hamlet of Peasdown, along with Giffords Farm and Fremnells Manor, disappeared as the valley was flooded. No complete buildings remain underwater, although foundations may become visible at exceptionally low water levels.

The reservoir was developed in the former Sandon Valley and today combines an important water-supply role with fishing, wildlife conservation, walking and accessible sailing.

There are two principal visitor areas. The fishing and Waterside Park facilities are on the reservoir side, while the Essex Wildlife Trust Nature Discovery Centre is at Hawkswood Road, Downham, Billericay CM11 1WT.
